I was listening the Diane Rehm show on NPR today and she was interviewing Richard Dreyfuss. There was one small comment on the show which I took notice too and thought yeah I agree with that.
What happened is they brought up the fact some people comment on the fact public figures, celebrities in particular I suppose, shouldn't voice their views on politics. Richard quite rightly states that he is an American too and has just as much right to voice his opinion as anyone else.
Sure a lot of celebrities have stupid political opinions. That goes without saying but that can also be said about people in general.
If you feel that public figures have an advantage by being in the spotlight and therefore should shut up then I think you're not addressing the problem while silencing people who have the right to voice their opinion.
The problem isn't that public figures have an advantage to sway people especially now with the internet and its ability to allow anyone to reach out to potentially everyone. The problem is that the average person treats celebrities and other public figures as being special and yes sometimes believe they're more intelligent.
Anyone in the spotlight is still just a human like anyone else. It doesn't matter if they played your favourite character or not. People need to separate fantasy from reality and realise they are not different from the rest of us. They're just doing their job and living their life. To be honest I think most people probably don't take celebrity opinions too seriously if only for the fact most of the time their views are stupid.
I believe too many people just don't think enough in general. This does cause some people to give celebrity opinion more value but more importantly it allows the government to do whatever it wants and bend the average citizen over. The only reason the wealth divide is growing is because people don't think and don't care so there is no incentive for the government to change anything.
Getting into the government is almost a job for life now. Why should they rock the boat and upset the businesses and rich people funding their way into government every election?
